Are you stuck? Same problems, same thoughts? Your relationship emotionally draining? Unable to find fulfillment in life, or imagine something different? Relief from suffering is my primary goal of the therapy I conduct. Depression, anxiety, addictions and trauma require another person to help you understand their pull and face them, so they no longer control your life. Suffering alone only forces the pain to emerge in symptoms, behaviors, and personal interactions that undermine your life. I help individuals and couples to alleviate symptoms, improve your relationships, improve your sense of self, and assist you in overcoming your suffering, transcending it, and finding meaning in it.
My approach tailors to what you need. My work is primarily psychodynamic, (a focus on conscious and unconscious processes), combining insight and reflection, but I also address your coping skills, mindfulness in the present moment, your interpersonal interactions and (any) self destructive patterns.

My natural instinct is to make sure you understand both the biological and psychological reasons behind your troubles and then we work together to put YOU back in control of your life.
I understand that people are different so I try to stay competent in a wide variety of treatment approaches. Your particular need might dictate flexibility. That's okay, I'm fine with meeting you where you stand and working with you at the pace that makes you comfortable.
So whether your issue is Anger, Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Addictions, relationship problems, or you suffer from Schizophrenia or one of the personality disorders like Borderline, I am looking forward to helping you find the enjoyment in life that you deserve! Karen Atkinson
I believe that people are the experts of their own lives. Unfortunately, sometimes past events or current situations cause upheaval and individuals begin to live according to unhelpful narratives which begin to define who they are or believe they must be. Living according to these unhelpful narratives becomes restrictive and uncomfortable, much like wearing shoes that are three sizes too small. My role as your therapist is collaborative; together we will uncover your inner strengths and begin the journey of rewriting your narrative.
This is how change begins to happen. I specialize in working with couples, families, and adolescents, and believe that if one individual starts to change, change will happen in the system.

Specialties
In addition to our information on substance abuse we also work with other addictions. What are other addictions? This can include gambling, food, sex, porn, technology, and love. Our other addictions program is comprised of groups and individual/family sessions. During the intense phase you will attend sessions 3 times a week. This will step down as you continue to heal. The primary groups are the DBT group and the Creative Arts group. We help prepare teens for future education and the work world and learn how to let go of entitlement believes and a expand the meaning of the word fair so they can create their own safe world.

Substance Abuse Groups
Several formats are available for addressing substance abuse issues. Substance abuse includes abuse of alcohol, street drugs, and/or prescription drugs. As primary treatment our full IOP program is the recommended approach. For those coming out of residential treatment, our modified IOP and transition to aftercare is generally a good strategy. For those who have sustained sobriety but hit a bump or need a bit help staying the course, we will modify a relapse prevention to suit your needs.
IOP
IOP is intensive outpatient treatment. Our full program and modified program have several common pieces. The primary difference is in the modified plan; you will transition to aftercare in less time. The primary program consists of 3 groups and 1 individual session weekly for 8 weeks, 2 groups and one individual session for 8 weeks and then a tailored aftercare program. The modified plan consists of 3 groups and 1 individual session for 4 weeks, 2 groups and one individual session for 2 weeks and then a tailored aftercare program.
